Hi. I am Stuart Gustafson, an avid traveler and a retiree from Hi-Tech Marketing who also likes to cook. I watch a lot of cooking shows on streaming services, and I recently came across a decade-old series called Gordon Ramsay’s Ultimate Cookery Course. I tried a couple of the recipes, and they were good! (Actually, they were better than good). That got me thinking … What if I were to prepare ALL of the recipes?
You will notice a slight difference in the images of the two book covers, which contain the same recipes but are intended for two different audiences. The one on the left with ULTIMATE COOKERY COURSE is the international edition, focused on U.K. cooks. The measurements in the book are in grams and liters (or litres), while the one on the right with HOME COOKING is targeted at U.S. cooks with measurements in ounces and cups. I have both books, and my comparison of the measurements show that they are essentially equivalent.
I do not have a timetable for completing all 100+ recipes because I travel a lot. I will be taking copies of recipes as well as some basic ingredients to some places (such as timeshares and short-term rentals), but it is not feasible to take items and cook when I am on a cruise ship — they kind of frown on guests entering the galley to do their own cooking. 🙂
There are many ingredients in these recipes with which I am not very familiar or have heard of but have not tried. One glaring example is risotto; it seems to be a staple in Gordon Ramsay menus, but I had never eaten it. It sounded a bit like “mushy rice” to me. Well, once I bought the proper type of rice (an important part of cooking) and followed Gordon’s recipe — I liked it and have even had it recently in a fine-dining restaurant. There are some words that use a different spelling in American grammar, the main one being “chilis” instead of his “chiles.” I will use the American versions where I find there to be a difference.
The first two dishes I prepared using the U.K. recipes from an online source were the Tomato Risotto and the Pork Chops with Peppers. Now that I have the U.S. version, I plan to start afresh to see how those measurements and the recipes themselves compare to my “adjusted” U.K. measurements for the recipes. You are invited to come along on my journey as I work my way through some of Gordon Ramsay’s popular (and not super difficult) recipes.
